Life of Brian

May 4, 2008 / by cwilson

I think that the film was hilarious and the satirical comedy was not inappropriate at all. I laughed a lot during the film. I sometimes use satirical comedy, or at least try. However, you say it the wrong person and it becomes offensive, I definitely do not talk to a few people because of some jokes made.
Life of Brian is a comedy film performed by the comedy team who created Monty Python. The film combined religion and comedy which was taken lightly by some.

In the film, Brian Cohen is born in a stable a few doors down from the one in which Jesus is born. Brian grows up to be a rebel, who resents the continuing Romans being in Judea, even after learning his father was a Roman Centurion, Maximus, a man who very well could have raped his mother. While attending a Sermon, he falls for a young female rebel, Judith. His desire for Judith and hatred for the Romans lead him to join the People's Front of Judea, a separatist movement, who spend more time fighting each other than the Romans. The group's cynical leader Reg gives Brian his first assignment as a rebel, to graffiti the governors wall at the palace. He succeeds but only because he is caught by a passing Roman guard who is disgusted with his poor grammar. The guard forces him to write out the right message one hundred times. The walls of the fortress are covered everywhere.

The guards immediately try to arrest Brian. He winds up accidentally taking the place of one of a motley group of mystics and prophets. He must fit in with the prophets so he says some religious nonsense which creates an audience for himself. Once he escapes the guards, Brian tries to move on but not knowing he has started a movement and is now considered a Messiah. Brian does not know what to do, every word he speaks is taken literally and followed by the people. The crowd continues to follow him around, he now is considered a miracle to the people.

The Romans finally catch the hapless Brian and send him to be crucified. Pontius Pilate almost pardons him, but everyone who is in the prison claim to be this famous Messiah Brian and the wrong man is released. Brian is then left to hang.

The moral of the film would be to not pretend to be something your not, it will only lead to trouble in the end. Although the film did in some way make a comedy out of what some believe to be very sacred, I did not find it offensive and I am of the Catholic religion.
