GO GREEN

April 22, 2008 / by cwilson

“In 1972, only 36 percent of the nations assessed stream miles were safe for uses such as fishing and swimming: today, about 60 percent are safe for such uses”

Earth Day is held annually during spring in the northern hemisphere. The purpose is to inspire awareness of and appreciation for the Earth's environment. The Earth Day that we celebrate here was founded by politician Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in in the late 1960s; it is celebrated on April 22 here in the United States as well as in many other countries worldwide. Through the combined efforts of the U.S. government, grassroots organizations, and citizens like myself, what started as a day of national environmental recognition has evolved into a world-wide campaign to protect our global environment. This earth is so very vulnerable to the impact that we have on it. Throughout the last 30 years so much has been done to damage it. But due to events and awareness like Earth Day we are slowly improving it. After looking into Earth Day online there are so many agency’s and programs that want to make a difference that is is possible.

Chico I noticed has tried to do its part, on Saturday they held the Eco fest. I was not able to attend but I’m sure that it gave precious information to those that were able to attend. On campus there has been several booths showing and promoting such ideas as “bring back the tap.” We waste and pollute so much due to water bottles that if we try and cut back very positive results will occur. I noticed while at Celestinos downtown they have pledged by today to stop using Styrofoam and switch to a much more eco-friendly storage container. I for one understand that I can have an impact so staring this earth day I will try and recycle 100% of all my bottles, cans, plastics and papers. I will ride my bike or walk whenever possible and try and spread this idea to others around me. Having been in a collage town now for 5 years I’ve seen so much waste and garbage that if I can change a few I’ve succeeded.
